Trailer vs RV vs Camper – What’s The Difference?

Before we explore some of the trailers and RVs available at Keith’s, we want to go over some of the terminology. It’s common for people to search for “RV trailers” when they are looking specifically for a travel trailer or a driveable RV, like a motor home (which is technically not a trailer).

Now, many people use the terms “trailer,” “RV” and camper interchangeably – if you come to us and ask for a trailer, RV or camper, that is completely okay! We’ll chat with you to determine exactly what you’re looking for.

However, if you would like to get into the nitty gritty details, these vehicles are all technically different. Let’s go over them below.

RVs – Recreational Vehicles

RV stands for recreational vehicle. RV is a broad term used to describe recreational vehicles and many people use RV to describe all types of vehicles including trailers, campers and motor homes. However, in technical terms, RVs describe vehicles that are drivable. So, when you think of a motor home that has a steering wheel, (does not need to be towed), that is an RV.

Trailers

It’s pretty simple to remember what a trailer is – they are vehicles that are trailed (towed) by another vehicle like an SUV or truck. Trailers come in a wide range of sizes and styles, from small couples trailers to large trailers suitable for big families.

Campers

“Camper” is a general, casual term used to describe any RV or trailer. However, there are also specific vehicles that are called campers, like truck campers. Truck campers are a type of RV (they are placed in the truck bed, not towed) and are an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts who want a simple set-up.

Travel Trailers on Sale (Sometimes Referred To As “RV Trailers”)

If you’ve come here looking for an “RV trailer,” there’s a good chance you are searching for a travel trailer! Travel trailers are among the most popular RV options on the market – and for good reason! Travel trailers are a budget-friendly entry point into the wonderful world of RV ownership.

Travel trailers come in a wide range of sizes and layouts to suit every need, budget and lifestyle. Whether you’re planning cozy getaways for two or need a spacious, family-friendly model with all the bells and whistles, you’ll find the perfect travel trailer to match your adventure and your budget.

All travel trailers need to be towed by another vehicle, like an SUV or a truck. How much weight your vehicle can tow will depend on the make, model and even year. Check out our tow guide to find out more.

Fifth Wheels

Explore fifth wheel trailers on sale and discover one of the most luxurious ways to travel! Fifth wheels are a unique type of trailer that can be towed by a pickup truck. However, instead of using a regular hitch, a fifth wheel attaches to a special “fifth wheel” hitch mounted in the bed of the truck, over the rear axle. You can see how it gets its name!

Fifth wheels are a popular choice for truck owners because their unique design offers improved stability on the road and easier maneuverability for the driver. The raised-forward section also creates extra living space, which is perfect for those with kids or travellers who like to invite friends or family along.

At Keith’s Trailer Sales, we offer a selection of pre-owned fifth wheels, allowing you to get all the luxury without the high price tag of a brand new RV.

Tent Trailers

Tent trailers, often called campers, are a great choice for those just entering the wonderful world of RVing. A folding pop-up camper is a fantastic option for both couples and families who are looking to upgrade from tent camping and add a bit of extra comfort to their travels.

Pop-up campers are lightweight, compact, and easy to tow – in many cases, they can be safely towed with a minivan or SUV. Their foldable design makes them simple to store, so you won’t have to sacrifice garage or driveway space when it’s not in use. This makes them a smart, space-saving choice for occasional trips.

Toy Haulers

Toy haulers are another unique trailer option as they are built with a rear garage space. This additional space is perfect for those who love adventure and tend to do a lot of high-energy activities while on vacation. With a toy hauler, it’s easy to bring along your ATV, dirt bikes, side-by-side, or any other gear you need to maximize your time away from home.

Whether you’re heading off-road or setting up camp with all your favourite toys in tow, a toy hauler offers the ideal blend of comfort and utility to fuel your next adventure. Many toy haulers are smaller and ideal for couples, however, they do come in larger sizes and can sleep up to eight people or more.

Truck Campers

Truck campers offer versatility, mobility, and compact convenience. If you own a truck, this might be the perfect fit for you and your family! Truck campers are a compact style of RV that fits directly into the bed of your pickup truck, which means no hitching required! With a truck camper, you just load up, hit the road, and set up camp wherever adventure calls.

These RVs are especially well-suited for solo travellers, couples, and outdoor enthusiasts who want a no-frills, go-anywhere camping experience. Because of their small footprint, truck campers can navigate narrow trails where larger RVs can’t go. They’re also easy to store when not in use and provide just enough space for essential comforts.

Park Models

Planning a long-term stay at your favourite campground or RV park? Park model trailers could be the perfect choice for your home away from home.

These models are very similar to tiny homes and are meant to be placed long-term at one location. They offer the comfort and layout of a tiny home and are ideal for seasonal living, long-term stays, or setting up a cozy getaway on your own piece of land. Often referred to as “tiny homes on wheels,” these units are built on a trailer chassis but are intended to be parked in one place for extended periods.

Park models typically feature residential-style kitchens, full-sized bathrooms, and separate sleeping areas. This means they are perfect for couples, larger families and those who love to host weekend getaways with family and friends.
